“Referencing Strang”, 2011

James Brown

“Referencing Strang”, 2011

Oil on canvas, 100 x 80cm

This is a reasonably old painting from 2011 that was made as an adaptation of the composition of William Strang’s small etching, “The House in the Lane”, 1897 (see below).

My interest was clearly not to copy Strang’s print stroke-for-stroke, but rather to reinvent very broadly what Strang was portraying in terms of what must be a Scottish lane leading past a grove of trees to a distant house. Instead of showing the lush trees and almost manicured landscape of Strang's world, I made the scene a North Queensland bush track with the typically scraggy gumtrees and ankle-twisting ground from my world.
