For
me, looking at trees is an important part of going on a morning walk, but what is truly exciting is when I see overlapping tree limbs creating especially beautiful windows of light shining within the trees. In the case
of this painting, I was walking beside a screen of trees and a
patch of these “windows of light” prompted
me to take a photo of them. Of course, the photo didn’t capture the phenomenon
of what I really saw at the time—the photo just looked like a fundamental shot
of drab trees set against the light. The photo did, however, give me the raw beginnings
to create the two paintings that I made (this being the first) of the spatial ambiguity between the solid forms of the trees and the light-filled
gaps within what I will call the architecture of the trees.
